Tesla Revs Up Hiring Again After Brutal Layoffs

Tesla appears to be ramping up hiring again, nearly two months after Elon Musk initiated widespread layoffs. The electric vehicle giant has begun advertising a host of new roles, signaling a shift from the drastic cuts it made earlier this year.

Back in April, Tesla made headlines by slashing 10% of its global workforce. This massive reduction saw the number of job listings on Tesla’s website for North America plummet from 3,400 to just 3. In the weeks that followed, even more workers were let go. However, late May brought a glimmer of hope as Tesla posted over a dozen jobs in its autopilot division.

Now, Tesla’s hiring efforts appear to be expanding further. As of this month, the company has over 60 positions advertised across the US and Canada on its website. These job listings, which reportedly surfaced within the last two weeks according to LinkedIn, suggest a significant ramp-up in recruitment. The initial reports of these new job listings came from Electrek.

The roles span various departments, including Tesla’s energy teams focused on solar and storage solutions. Some positions involve providing “corrective maintenance services” for Tesla’s energy products, such as its charging stations. Notably, Tesla had laid off its entire supercharger division earlier, following a reported clash between the division’s chief and Musk. The company has since rehired some members of the supercharger team, as noted by Bloomberg.

The layoffs had a ripple effect, causing uncertainty among Tesla’s suppliers. Andres Pinter, co-CEO of Bullet EV Charging Solutions, a Tesla supplier, described the situation as a “serious case of whiplash.” Pinter mentioned that it seems an existing Tesla team from a different department has been brought in to manage the charging division, though it’s unclear if this change is temporary or permanent.

In addition to these energy-related roles, Tesla is also advertising for positions at its forthcoming lithium plant in Corpus Christi, Texas. According to Reuters, Elon Musk has ambitious plans for this plant, which is expected to produce enough lithium for about 1 million electric vehicles by 2025.

Tesla’s hiring spree extends to its internship programs as well, with opportunities in vehicle servicing and mechanical design available for the summer and fall of 2024. This is a notable shift, considering the automaker had previously revoked some summer internships less than a month before their start date. One would-be intern took to LinkedIn to share that his internship was canceled just three weeks before it was set to begin.

Tesla’s renewed hiring efforts come after a tumultuous period marked by significant layoffs and organizational changes. This development could indicate that the company is stabilizing and gearing up for future growth. For those interested in joining Tesla, the latest job openings provide a glimpse into the company’s evolving needs and areas of focus.

As Tesla navigates its way through these changes, it remains to be seen how these new hires will shape the company’s future. However, for now, it seems Tesla is once again ready to welcome new talent into its ranks.
