In a strategic move, Alaska Airlines has formally announced its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines in a groundbreaking $1.9 billion deal. The joint statement released by both airlines on Sunday outlines their shared vision to enhance travel options for passengers on the West Coast and throughout the Hawaiian Islands while preserving the unique identities of each carrier.

Aiming for a Seamless Travel Experience

Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Airlines, expressed enthusiasm about the consolidation, stating, “This combination is an exciting next step in our collective journey to provide a better travel experience for our guests and expand options for West Coast and Hawai’i travelers.” He emphasized the deep respect Alaska Airlines holds for Hawaiian Airlines and the cultural significance of the latter’s brand.

Financial Dynamics of the Deal

The $1.9 billion transaction encompasses the acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines along with the assumption of $900 million in net debt, as clarified in the joint press release. This move is expected to fortify the position of both airlines and foster a collaborative approach to serving passengers.

Strategic Hub in Honolulu

Anticipating an essential role for Honolulu, the combined airline is set to establish it as a key hub. The objective is to provide enhanced services for Hawai’i residents traveling to the Continental U.S. while opening up new connectivity options to Asia and other Pacific destinations for travelers across the United States.

Approval and Timeline

Pending approval by Hawaiian shareholders, the deal is slated to conclude within 12 to 18 months, as indicated by company officials. The move marks a significant development in the airline industry, promising a dynamic shift in travel offerings and connectivity across the Pacific region.
